Our Story
Hickory Hill was born from a heartfelt vision to meet a vital need in our area. Inspired by her parents’ and grandparents’ experiences at the Holland Home of South Holland, Illinois, our founder, Dolores "Ms. Dee" Mullens, dreamed of creating a place where families in Southside Virginia could remain close to their loved ones during their golden years.
Ms. Dee and her family, residents of the Burkeville, VA area for over 50 years, turned that vision into reality in 1998 by building Hickory Hill on their family land. For 25 years, she operated the community with warmth, compassion, and dedication until her passing in 2023. Today, her daughter Laura, who worked alongside her mother since day 1, continues to uphold Ms. Dee’s legacy as our current Administrator.
